Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 1 Episode 10 Recap (2024)

The long-awaited Wizards of Waverly Place reboot show Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has finally released episode 10, wrapping up part 1 of the show's first season. Based on Alex and Justin Russo's ages, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set about 15 years after Wizards of Waverly Place. Unlike Wizards of Waverly Place, which was primarily about middle sister of the Russo siblings Alex Russo, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place focuses on Justin Russo and his family, which includes his wife, Giada, and his sons, Roman and Milo.

Billie, a young wizard who has gotten into some trouble at school, is also taken under Justin's wing, joining the Russo household and receiving wizard training. Episode 10 explores these dynamics in even greater detail, including by introducing brand-new characters. Due to the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place episode release schedule, many were expecting episode 10 to release on Disney+ on November 23rd, 2024. Although episode 10 is not yet available on Disney+, it did premiere on the Disney Channel and can be watched at disneynow.com. Here's everything episode 10 revealed.

Billie’s Wizard Best Friend Nerissa Comes To Visit

Nerissa And Billie Were Known As The "Chaos Queens" At WizTech

A brand-new character, Nerissa, was introduced in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place episode 10. Billie began explaining to her mortal friend, Winter, how Nerissa was the coolest person she'd ever met. At that point, Nerissa calls Billie and reveals that she cast a spell to know whenever someone was speaking about her. Nerissa seamlessly appears just moments later, effectively popping right out of the phone.

It becomes clear over the course of the episode that while Nerissa and Billie were genuinely very good friends at WizTech, their personalities no longer quite mesh. Billie has become much more of a rule follower since joining the Russo household (although she still finds trouble in hilarious ways throughout the show), and Nerissa is disappointed, feeling as though her friend has been changed by the 'boring' mortal world. While it isn't as black-and-white as Nerissa being a bad influence on Billie, because Billie was once the same way, their differences become increasingly obvious.

Bella Bianchi Vows To Uncover Milo’s Secret

Milo's Nemesis, Bella, May Now Be One Of The Biggest Threats To The Russos

Bella Bianchi had already been established among Wizards Beyond Waverly Place's characters, but she became a potentially much more serious risk to the Russo family in episode 10. In the episode, Milo is trying and sadly failing to successfully grow a sunflower, which is required for school. Bella video calls Milo to show off her sunflower, revealing that hers is flourishing while Milo's is entirely dried up and dead. This leads Milo down a dangerous path of tampering with his sunflower via magic.

Although Bella doesn't know Milo used magic nor that he comes from a family of wizards, she is immediately suspicious of his sudden ability to grow a massive sunflower. She vows in front of Milo, Justin, and Giada to uncover Milo's secret. While she likely means cheating of some kind, such as buying a sunflower (which Milo had asked Justin to do for him, although Justin said no), if Bella really begins digging into the Russos, she could discover their secret. This means that a character who began as an annoyance to Milo may now be a very real threat.

Milo Trades Bodies With A Garden Gnome

Nerissa Helps Milo With His Sunflower...But It Doesn't Go Well

Nerissa notices that Milo is struggling to complete his sunflower assignment, so she hands him a gnome, not explaining what the gnome will do beyond helping him with his flower. After asking no further questions, Milo takes the gnome outside and begins speaking to it. The gnome assures Milo that he can grow the perfect sunflower, but Milo must agree to do something for him in exchange. Yet again without asking any follow-up questions, Milo agrees.

Although the gnome follows through on his promise and grows a stunning, massive sunflower, he reveals that his side of the bargain requires Milo to trade bodies with him, freeing him from his "ceramic prison." In the end, Milo manages to find his parents in the garage and tells them all that has transpired. With very little resistance from the gnome, their bodies are finally swapped back. However, this is precisely when Bella arrives on the scene, again calling into question how much she might be able to learn about the Russo family's massive secret.

Roman Meets A Pixie Named Iggy

Iggy And Roman Are Highly Reminiscent Of Justin's Best Wizards Of Waverly Place Relationship

To prove she's still cool, Billie throws a party for wizards and other magical beings at the Russo household. Although Roman, Justin's rule-following oldest son, is at first horrified by this, when he lays eyes on Iggy, a pixie attending the party, he changes his mind. He is immediately infatuated with Iggy, forgetting his own name and asking her if she is an angel. This is the first significant crush on the show, and this connection between Roman and Iggy is very reminiscent of the most popular relationship Justin had in Wizards of Waverly Place, with Juliet Van Heusen.

Not only does Iggy share a bit of a resemblance with Juliet, but also, the dynamic between Roman and Iggy is strikingly similar to that of Justin and Juliet. Like Justin and Juliet, who were a wizard and vampire respectively, Roman and Iggy have distinct identities. It remains to be seen if Justin's sons have magic powers, which leaves the question of whether Roman is a wizard up in the air, but at the very least, Iggy is unique because she is a pixie. Moreover, Roman shares Justin's nervous, somewhat dorky energy, and Iggy matches Juliet's witty nature.

Winter And Billie Enter A Shadow Box

Billie's Mortal Best Friend Wants To Prove Herself Worthy Of The "Chaos Queens"

When the party proves not to be enough to convince Nerissa that Billie is still cool—because Billie gets upset with a werewolf for tearing up the Russo's couch—Billie takes things one step further and casts a spell to open a shadow box. The shadow box appears as a creepy door with chains across it, and it evidently contains horrors so terrifying that no one has ever lasted more than five minutes inside one. Despite that, Winter decides to enter the box, wanting to show Billie and Nerissa that she is worthy of being a Chaos Queen with them.

This is all the more impressive given even the wizards are hesitant to enter the box; Winter is a mere mortal. To protect her friend, Billie goes running in after her. In the box, not only are the girls greeted with creepy smoke and flashing lights, but they also encounter the mysterious hooded figure who was previously revealed to be after Billie. Although there are theories about who the hooded figure is, so far, their true identity remains unknown.

The Masked Figure Is Seen Again—And Given A Name

The Hooded Figure's True Identity Remains Secret, But This Type Of Villain Has A Name

In episode 9 of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a mysterious hooded figure was revealed to be after Billie. Very little has been revealed thus far about this villain, although they do use purple magic and seem to be in some way connected to the threat to the world Alex Russo mentioned in episode 1. In episode 10, this figure reappeared, this time in the shadow box.

Episode 10 revealed that hooded figures such as this one are called gravelings, and they serve evil wizards.

In the shadow box, Winter, Billie, and the hooded villain all continually trade places. While this is comical, it's clear that this individual is a very real threat to Billie, and there's little doubt the character will become increasingly important as the rest of season 1 of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is revealed. For the time being, though, episode 10 revealed that hooded figures such as this one are called gravelings, and they serve evil wizards. This is particularly interesting, as it suggests the true villain may not have been revealed yet.

Billie And Nerissa Part Ways Because Billie Has Changed

In The End, The Friends Are Just Too Different

Throughout episode 10, it became increasingly evident that, with all that had happened at the Russo house, Billie wasn't the same person she had been when she was friends with Nerissa at WizTech. Although it was clear that there were no hard feelings between the two girls, in the end, they parted ways, resigned to the fact that their friendship had changed. That isn't to say they weren't friends anymore—the door still seemed very open for them to reunite in the future—but it was obvious things between them had shifted.

In addition to this being an interesting story in its own right, this was also a major moment of character development for Billie as an individual. What had changed for Billie since Nerissa had last seen her was an interest in following the rules, fitting into a family unit, and being thoughtful about how her actions would affect those around her. While that might make her seem boring to other teenagers, it shows major growth for the character and proves that Justin's training has already had an impact.

Billie Embraces Who She Is Now

Billie Also Learned Self Love During This Arc

What makes this exchange between Billie and Nerissa all the more meaningful and heartwarming is what it represents for Billie's sense of self. When she first arrived at the Russo house, she was constantly worried about being kicked out or being perceived as just a troublemaker. Now, it's clear that Billie has truly begun to feel like part of the Russo family, and it's helped her develop confidence in herself. This was confirmed at the end of episode 10, when she sat down to play the 'boring' mortal board game with the whole family, clearly happy with where she was.

Episode 10 still leaves many questions on the table, however. It remains unclear who is after Billie, why Justin has his powers after being fired from WizTech, and whether Milo and Roman inherited magic powers from their father. Those questions will likely be addressed in upcoming episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, although the exact timeline for additional episodes hasn't yet been clarified by Disney.
